Sorrow

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.   Genesis 3:16-19 

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.   Genesis 42:38 

And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;
It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.   Genesis 44:29-31 

And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.   Exodus 3:7, 8 

The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.   Exodus 15:14 

I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.   Leviticus 26:16 

And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.   Deuteronomy 28:65-67 

And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.   1 Samuel 1:15 

When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.   1 Samuel 10:2-4 

The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.   2 Samuel 22:6, 7 

And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.   1 Chronicles 4:9 

Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.   Nehemiah 2:2-4 

As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.   Esther 9:22 

Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.   Job 3:10 

The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.   Job 6:7 

Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.   Job 6:10 

I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.   Job 9:28 

Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow.   Job 17:7 

How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.   Job 21:17 

They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.   Job 39:3 

In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.   Job 41:22 

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;
Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.   Psalm 13:2-4 

Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.   Psalm 16:4 

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.   Psalm 18:4, 5 

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.   Psalm 32:10 

For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.   Psalm 38:17 

I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.   Psalm 39:2 

Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.   Psalm 55:10 

But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.   Psalm 69:29 

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.   Psalm 90:10 

Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.   Psalm 107:39 

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.   Psalm 116:3 

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.   Psalm 127:2 

He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.   Proverbs 10:10 

The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.   Proverbs 10:22 

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.   Proverbs 14:13 

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.   Proverbs 15:13 

He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.   Proverbs 17:21 

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.   Proverbs 23:29, 30 

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.   Ecclesiastes 1:18 

For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.   Ecclesiastes 2:23 

All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.   Ecclesiastes 5:17 

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.   Ecclesiastes 7:3 

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.   Ecclesiastes 11:10 

And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.   Isaiah 5:30 

And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.   Isaiah 13:8 

And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,
That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!   Isaiah 14:3, 4 

In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.   Isaiah 17:11 

Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel.   Isaiah 29:2 

And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.   Isaiah 35:10 

Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.   Isaiah 50:11 

Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.   Isaiah 51:11 

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.   Isaiah 53:3, 4 

Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.   Isaiah 65:14 

When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.   Jeremiah 8:18 

What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in travail?
And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.   Jeremiah 13:21, 22 

Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?   Jeremiah 20:18 

The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,
Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.   Jeremiah 21:1, 2 

Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.   Jeremiah 30:15 

Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.   Jeremiah 31:12, 13 

For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.   Jeremiah 31:25 

Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.   Jeremiah 45:3 

Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.   Jeremiah 49:23, 24 

And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the LORD shall be performed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.   Jeremiah 51:29 

Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.   Lamentations 1:12 

The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.   Lamentations 1:18 

Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.   Lamentations 3:65 

Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.   Ezekiel 23:33

The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.   Hosea 13:13 

I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.   Zephaniah 3:18 

Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.   Zechariah 9:5 

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.   Matthew 19:22 

All these are the beginning of sorrows.   Matthew 24:8 

And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.   Matthew 26:22, 23 

And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.   Matthew 26:37, 38 

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.   Mark 13:8 

And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.   Mark 14:19, 20 

And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.   Mark 14:34 

And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.   Luke 2:48 

And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!   Luke 18:23, 24 

And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.   Luke 22:45, 46 

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.   John 16:6 

Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.   John 16:20-22 

Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.   Acts 20:38 

That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.   Romans 9:2 

And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.   2 Corinthians 2:3 

So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.   2 Corinthians 2:7 

As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.   2 Corinthians 6:10 

Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.   2 Corinthians 7:9-11 

For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.   Philippians 2:27, 28 

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.   1 Thessalonians 4:13 

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.   1 Timothy 6:10 

How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.   Revelation 18:7 

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.   Revelation 21:4
